Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 35

Stephen Burns, a backup safety in 2009, was the first Wildcat to wear #35. He participated in the ROTC program at Cy Woods before joining the team.

Harley Burke, an outside linebacker, made the varsity in 2010, his junior year. He also competed in the pole vault and the 110/300 hurdles during track season. He did not play football as a senior.

How can I write this next part.... I seriously debated with myself on whether I should have even written this in the first place. It's just a sad, sad story all around.

In November 2013, Texas EquuSearch members came across his body while they were searching for another missing individual. His death was ruled a homicide and attracted a fair amount of media attention.

I didn't interact with Harley very much, but I knew him through Cy Woods athletics. Those who knew him better than I did can most likely reminisce on their days spent with him much better than I can. While Harley always seemed to be a bit wild, I remember that he was always friendly and was an absolute joy to be around. On the football field, he carried that wild streak with him... he was fearless. His younger brother, John Christian, is a junior offensive lineman.

Samuel Stewart wore #35 in 2011, his sophomore season. As a running back/wide receiver that year, he was absolutely electrifying and provided Wildcat fans a sign of things to come. Sam wore #24 in his final two seasons. More on him once I get to #24.

Samuel Stewart, 2011-13; wore #24 in 2012 and 2013

Caleb Smith wore #35 against Cy Lakes in 2013, which was the only game in which he saw action as a varsity player that season. He wore #46 in 2014, his first full season as a varsity player. Jake Jones, a cornerback, was assigned #35 when he was called up later in 2013 and switched to #10 for his senior year.

Caleb Smith and Jake Jones, 2013; Caleb wore #46 in 2015, while Jake wore #10 in 2014.

Myles Wilson, a safety, made the varsity as a sophomore in 2014. His mother, Mrs. Lagard, is the associate principal at Cypress Springs High School; she had been an assistant principal at Cy Woods and had served the school in that capacity since its inception. I remember Myles being at just about every Woods game before he ever stepped foot inside the school as a student. He was a ball boy back then, and he got a chance to play for a team that he grew up watching.

Myles served as a team captain in 2016 and played for two seasons at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.

Maclaren "Mac" Bird, a linebacker, made the varsity in 2017, his junior year. He racked up 51 tackles in just four games before he had a serious health scare that stemmed from clearing debris from Hurricane Harvey. His older brother, Trent, was a linebacker and a pole vaulter at Cy Woods. Their sister, Cameron, plays basketball and also pole vaults. If I remember correctly, their father, Scott, competed collegiately as a pole vaulter and he ended up passing it down to his kids. Mac currently holds Cy Woods' record clearance in the pole vault.

Ethan Shook, a cat-backer (outside linebacker), made the varsity in 2019, his junior year. He was mainly a special teams player in his first season.

Austin Greaves (pronounced "graves") made the Opening Night roster in 2013, his sophomore season, and appeared in two games before moving down to the JV for the rest of that season. He moved to linebacker and switched to #8 in 2014. More on him when I get to #8.

Austin Greaves, 2013-present; wore #8 in 2014

With Austin Greaves switching to #8 in 2014, Danny Malone, a linebacker, became the next Wildcat to wear #38. Danny had a couple of sacks, but he really established himself as a special teams ace during the 2014 season.

Danny Malone, 2014

Nijah Surtain, a running back, joined the team early in 2016, his sophomore year. With C.J. Jones injured, he was thrust into a major role on the offense. 2016 was the only year that he played varsity football at Cy Woods.

Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 40

Done with the 40s. Today is my birthday.

40 starts off with a couple of military men.

Clint Taylor, a linebacker in 2008, was the first to wear 40. Clint was one of the most fearless players to ever put on a Cy Woods uniform. Everything he did on the field, game or practice, was done at breakneck speed. He was never one to back down from his opponents. Clint also competed as a pole vaulter on the Wildcat track team and jointly holds the record with Sam Landingham; they have both cleared 14 feet on the vault.

Clint successfully walked on at Texas State, but he eventually answered the call to serve and became a Marine, serving tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Clint Taylor, 2008

Travis Strahan, another linebacker, wore 40 in 2009. He was also a featured actor in the Cy Woods theater program; his younger brothers, Trevor and Trent, followed in his footsteps and became actors at Cy Woods. While at the University of Texas, Travis joined the ROTC program and is now an infantryman in the United States Army.

Casem Noureddin wore 40 in 2010, his junior year. He switched to 36 as a senior in 2011.

Chase McLaughlin, a kicker, wore 40 when he was promoted to the playoffs as a sophomore in 2011 and wore this number full-time in 2012. He switched to #11 for his senior year. More on him when I get to 11.

Chase McLaughlin, 2011-13; wore #11 in 2013

Blake LeBlanc, a backup linebacker, wore 40 in 2013. Later on that season, Morgan Tosten, then a linebacker, was given this number when he was called up. He switched to #69 and was a defensive end in 2014, his senior year.

Austin Goffney, normally a quarterback, was assigned 40 when he was called up to the varsity as a sophomore in 2014. He wore #13 in 2015.

Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 41

Almost done with the 40s. First up is the first kicker in Cy Woods history.

Andrew Klink made the first varsity team in his junior year. I always remembered that after he missed an extra point, he would literally send the ensuing kickoff into orbit. One example of this was when he put a ball on top of the field house at Pridgeon against Cy Springs in 2008.

Andrew previously the held the Cy Woods record for points scored by a kicker with 134 until Luis Reyes broke it in 2015. Andrew also played fútbol for the Wildcats. After Cy Woods, he kicked and punted at Austin College, a Division III school located in Sherman.

Deoundrei Davis, an outside linebacker, was promoted to the varsity in 2010, his sophomore year, and was given this number. He eventually became a true impact player for the Wildcats and became the highest-profile player for the Wildcats in terms of recruiting (to this point). He was rated as the #10 outside linebacker in the nation by 247Sports for the class of 2013, a top-150 recruit by ESPN and was selected as a U.S. Army All-American.

Unfortunately, Deoundrei missed much of his senior season due to a torn ACL. He signed with the University of Texas, but redshirted his freshman year as he rehabbed that knee injury. He did not appear in a game for the Longhorns.

Ryan Cooper, a backup linebacker, wore 41 in 2013.
