On Saturday at the Berry Center, the Cats suffered their 1st loss to Cy Ranch in 4 years as they had a wretched time trying to throw the ball all night and their 4th quarter misery on offense continued. They couldn't hold a 35-24 lead and Ranch took advantage of those 4th quarter woes to snatch a 38-35 victory.

R.J. Harmon and Nick Hooper ran for over 100 yards and scored 2 TDs apiece, while the other Wildcat TD came in the form of a 95-yard kickoff return from C.J. Jones to open up the 2nd half.

2¢ on Creek

For the early part of the 2013 season, the Cougars looked as if they'd mount a serious threat to contend for the district title, but the wheels fell off for them after a 4-0 start. After they topped Cy Springs in overtime in week 4, they finished the season on a 6-game losing streak.

After being in a timeshare with Ross Hargrove last season, Brett Baumgartner will take the reins of the Cougar offense. Adam Coleman noted that he was "pretty fast" in the previous Varsity Wires podcast. Hargrove could see some time, though. Matt Shoffner and Tommy Huynh are their top returning receivers. Terrell Aldridge and Overton Croomes, their top 2 running backs from last year, have graduated, but they have a good tandem in the making with Tre Earls and Matt Hines.

Their defense is anchored by 2 really good LBs in Jacoby Brooks and Josh Head. Brooks was a 1st-team all-district performer last season, while Head garnered 2nd-team honors. Jay Beck is a returning starter in the secondary, while Steverson also saw significant action last year as a sophomore; it appears that he missed last year's game.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

In a smash-mouth defensive affair, Coach Faith got his first win against his former employers as the Cats came out on top 21-14 in a game where all the touchdowns were scored by 2 people: Overton Croomes for Creek, and Samuel Stewart for Woods.

Sam scored on 2 runs from 15 and 11 yards in the 2nd, and he ran a punt back 63 yards for another score in the 3rd quarter to give the Cats a 21-7 lead. Croomes responded with a 3-yard run with 9:25 left in the 4th to make it a 1-score game once again, and the Cougars threatened to tie the game in the dying moments, but the Wildcat defense mounted a goal-line stand and repelled Creek from the endzone to preserve their lead.
