Previously on Cy Woods Football...

On November 19, the Cypress Woods Wildcats concluded the 2020 regular season by strolling to a 56-18 victory over a winless Cy Lakes squad. The Wildcats wound up securing third place in District 16-6A and the #2 seed in the Division I bracket. 

Now, after two weeks off, Cy Woods begins their road to Arlington... on the road, appropriately enough. The first team standing in their path presents a formidable challenge.

2¢ on Cain

The Klein Cain Hurricanes, Klein ISD's newest high school, has experienced a rise similar to Bridgeland's. Cain is essentially a newer, sleeker version of Klein Oak, whose attendance zone they cut into. Like Bridgeland, the Hurricanes' junior class has put them on the map and two of these kids are on the verge of superstardom.

Jaydon Blue is one of 2022's top recruits and is probably the top junior running back in the country. He's averaging over nine yards per carry and almost 200 yards a night. Seems pretty good. Like Conner Weigman, he can pretty much go anywhere he feels like going for college.

Matt Golden is by far their top receiving threat and is also a top receiver for the class of 2022. Golden also handles the punting duties for Cain and he's done a fantastic job of flipping the field when called upon to kick it away. Carson Roper has come into his own as the Hurricanes' new signal-caller and Cade Farragut has been a solid second option in the passing game. Aaron Jordan has also done well spelling Blue in certain situations. Byron Deary and Johrdan Howard anchor the Cain offensive line along with John Dos Santos.

The Hurricanes possess solid talent across all three levels of their defense as well. Lukia Rawls was a first-team All-District pick as a sophomore last season and he has continued to be a disruptive force on their defensive line. Connor Been and Dylan Stevens are Cain's top two tacklers this season and they've done well in replacing Bryson Culton, who put up 101 tackles last year. Isaac Hudson is a three-year starter in a deep secondary and he'll be joined by Ryan Toth, John Arispe, Isaiah Elmore, Jeff Brown, and rising sophomore Daven Martin at the back. 

Klein Cain is a well-rounded team across the board and they certainly have the advantage over the Wildcats in terms of pure talent. But then again, being out-athleted isn't anything new to Cy Woods football and they've won their fair share of these matchups.

As you all know, there's no tomorrow when playoff time rolls around. This game will be a huge challenge for Cy Woods football, but I know they have the fortitude to find a way to win this game. These are the games where 212° shines brightest.

If you're familiar with this area, you know that Klein Memorial is not a fun stadium to enter or exit with your vehicle. The visitor's side faces Steubner-Airline.

Playoff Outlook

With the season complete, Cy Woods has two weeks off to prepare for the playoffs. This is week two of their time off... now that Thanksgiving is over with, it's time to get back to work. The Wildcats will begin their road to Arlington on Thursday, December 10 against Klein Cain.

District 16-6A knows who they'll be matching up against, but what does the rest of Region II look like?I'll update this post once we know more.

Yes, there was a three-way tie for third, but the aspect of the tie that mattered most was Klein Collins' 31-17 victory over Tomball.

District 9-6A - Garland/Wylie

Division II: #1 Naaman Forest, #2 Garland

The two Division II spots for 9-6A were decided this past weekend. Naaman Forest beat North Garland 51-0 while the Garland/Lakeview Centennial game got canceled. Lakeview was supposed to advance by virtue of being the higher seed in their zone, but a COVID outbreak in their program has resulted in Garland advancing. If any of the four teams above are affected by the virus, then Rowlett would be the replacement team.

District 10-6A - East DFW/Tyler

10-6A wraps up district play this week and there is one spot left to be decided.

Division I: #1 Rockwall, #2 Dallas Skyline

Division II: #1 Rockwall-Heath, #2 Tyler Legacy

Tyler Legacy (formerly known as Tyler Lee) clinched the final playoff spot in 10-6A with a 42-35 win over Mesquite Horn on Saturday.

District 11-6A - South DFW/Waco

Division I: #1 Duncanville, #2 DeSoto

Division II: #1 Cedar Hill, #2 Waxahachie

District 12-6A - CenTex

Division I: #1 Killeen Shoemaker, #2 Harker Heights

Harker Heights defeated Belton 42-20 on Thursday to claim the final playoff spot in District 12-6A.

Congratulations to Park for making the playoffs for the first time ever. Their reward is a Tomball Memorial team that's laid waste to everyone in their path. I wish them well.

Previously on Cy Woods Football...

It was a happy Homecoming for the Cypress Woods Wildcats as they topped the Cypress Springs Panthers by a final score of 63-36 to clinch a playoff berth. As it stands, the Cats will be the #2 seed in the Division I bracket.

The Wildcats will wrap up the regular season with one final tune-up before a long layoff awaits. In case you have not heard, the game with Katy Tompkins that was originally scheduled for December 4 has been canceled.

Now, let's take a look at the rest of Region II.

District 9-6A - Garland/Wylie

So apparently in 9-6A, a one-loss team missing the playoffs is now a thing as a previously winless Wylie team defeated previously undefeated Rowlett 30-27 on Friday, rendering the rest of Rowlett's season meaningless. 9-6A tried to play a zone schedule while trying to get a full district schedule in at the same time, and... it completely backfired on them. Rowlett could potentially win out and it wouldn't matter. Wylie, meanwhile, could lose out and that wouldn't matter either.

In another win-and-you're-in game, Sachse beat South Garland 57-13. So, Sachse and Wylie will be the Division I representatives for 9-6A. The other two play-in games, which would be for places in the Division II bracket, will pit Naaman Forest against North Garland while Garland faces Lakeview Centennial.

Sheesh.

District 10-6A - East DFW/Tyler

Rockwall tops 10-6A with their 4-0 record. Behind them are Rockwall-Heath and a familiar school: Dallas Skyline, who are tied at 2-1. Currently, the Division I teams from 10-6A are Rockwall (#1) and Skyline (#2); the Yellowjackets smacked the Raiders 56-6 last week.

District 11-6A - South DFW/Waco

The four playoff teams in District 11-6A are set. 11-6A utilized zone play this season. Much more competently than District 9-6A, might I add.

Division I: #1 Duncanville, #2 DeSoto

Division II: #1 Cedar Hill, #2 Waxahachie

District 12-6A - CenTex

The two schools currently slated for Division I are Killeen Shoemaker and either Harker Heights or Belton, who are currently tied for fourth at 2-2. Temple and Bryan are the current Division II teams. 

The Knights and Tigers will play each other on December 3, during the final week of the regular season. Harker Heights beat Shoemaker 51-50 in overtime last week. Before they meet, Harker Heights will play Killeen and Copperas Cove, while Temple has Ellison and Shoemaker.

District 13-6A - Conroe ISD/Willis

College Park and The Woodlands are the current DI teams. Oak Ridge and Grand Oaks would be in Division II.

District 14-6A - Aldine/Spring

Spring (#1) and Westfield (#2) are the current Division I teams. The last two spots, currently occupied by Dekaney and Eisenhower, will go to Division II.

The Cypress Lakes Spartans were once again on the doorstep of the playoffs in 2019, but once again, they couldn't make the breakthrough as they were left to rue some close losses. You can take your pick as to which loss stung more: 

- The 73-70 slugfest against Tomball Memorial in which they just needed one more stop. 

- Missing a game-tying field goal against Woods that would have forced overtime, or... 

- ...squandering a 31-13 second-half lead against Ranch.

Not even the otherworldly efforts of Sofian Massoud could spur the Spartans onto the playoffs. Now, with Massoud moving on to the University of Houston, the Spartans now face a significant rebuild and at 0-8, they are essentially back at square one. Not only has Massoud departed, Lakes also lost their leading receiver, Khaliq Mateen, and the person who would have been their top returning receiver, Josh McMillan, who moved to Tompkins. They also lost a talented trio in the secondary as Eamon Perry, Kyree Anderson, and Xavier Corbin have all moved on. Simply put, the Spartans were decimated by graduation and a very significant move-out.

I've said this many times, however: even the teams that are perceived as being "not good" in Cy-Fair ISD have a few players who can cause problems. There are no truly bad teams in this district. Amir Turner and KeLan Dove are legit threats in the passing game and they could certainly play at any of the other schools in this district. Zoel Henriquez, Justin Gomez, and Neven Aguilar anchor the Spartans' offensive line. 

Last Time These Two Teams Met

The Wildcats fended off a challenge from probably one of the best quarterbacks to come through Cy-Fair ISD in a decade, Sofian Massoud, and hung on for a 31-28 victory as Lakes kicker Axel Espinal missed a 48-yard field goal as time expired. Massoud had four total touchdowns, but Jackson Jones matched him with four of his own as he ran for 96 yards and three scores while throwing for 157 yards and a touchdown.

Colton Morris had 14 tackles, a season-high for any Cy Woods player in that category during the 2019 season. 

Sub-Varsity Game Information

As this is a Thursday game week, the sub-varsity teams will play on Wednesday. Cypress Lakes has two freshman teams and one JV team. The JV will play at Cy Woods at 5:30 while the freshmen travel to Lakes.

The Wildcat offense broke free from Cy Ranch's shackles as they ran roughshod over Cypress Park in a 42-28 victory. Trayse Holmes ran for 138 yards and tied a single-game record with four touchdowns. Dylan Cormier got intercepted three times but he ran for 81 yards and two scores of his own. Dylan Rogers' breakout season continued as he put up 12 tackles and a sack. 

And now, it's Homecoming at the Woods! As always, Homecoming brings out the pageantry and the possible distractions. Well, given that we are still in a pandemic, maybe not this year. This will be the third time that the Cypress Springs Panthers will serve as the Homecoming opponent.

2¢ on Springs

The Cypress Springs Panthers spent the latter part of the 2010s as a sleeping giant. With players such as Troy Brown, Donnell Dunn, Leon O'Neal, Taye Barber, and Xayvion West assuming starring roles, they looked like they would finally shed their status as the minnows of Cy-Fair ISD football. Unfortunately, despite flashing their prodigious potential, the Panthers never really fulfilled that promise.

Cy Springs only won one game in the previous district alignment and they entered the 2020s mired in a 15-game losing streak, the longest in program history. The 15-game slide also included a 13-game losing streak in district play. The Panthers managed to stop those streaks at 19 and 15, respectively, with their victory over Lakes, but they are clearly a team in the midst of a long-term rebuilding project.

Springs has been missing one of their top returning players, Camdyn Brooks, for much of this season. Jermari Seals enters his third year on the Panthers and has become a leader on defense in Brooks' absence. Marc Bailey, who got thrown into the fire as a sophomore defensive back last season, has switched to offense and has become one of their primary weapons on that side of the ball. Josh Hunter, a move-in from Langham Creek, has emerged as a playmaking linebacker as he leads the Panthers in tackles. Terrill Curtis, who played receiver last year, is now a defensive back and he's taken to the transition very well as he leads District 16-6A with three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Cameron White is fourth on the team with 27 tackles; he has become a factor in the return game as he's averaging a little over 24 yards per kick return and he's also done a decent job handling the punting duties.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

Cy Woods clinched a playoff spot with a 31-15 victory over the winless Panthers. Woods ran for 290 yards and that yardage was split between seven different players. Amari McDonald had a 53-yard touchdown reception. 

This game wasn't particularly memorable, really.

Sub-Varsity Game Information

Well, considering that both sub-varsity levels played at Park last week, I have no idea where they'll play this week. I believe that Springs has two freshman teams and one JV team.

Ugh, do I have to?

The Wildcat offense went missing last Saturday against Cy Ranch and the defense had to do all the scoring. Unfortunately, they only scored two points. The Wildcats lost 20-2.

Now, Cy Woods kicks off Week 7 in District 16-6A against a young program that has started to find its way in the jungle of Texas high school football using a relentless rushing attack.

After a winless debut season, the Cypress Park Tigers made significant strides in Year Two, and to be honest, they were probably a handful of plays from finishing .500 last season. After just trying to survive Year One, the Tigers found themselves hanging around with Cy Ranch and nearly pulled off a stunning upset on the road against Tomball Memorial, so they were *that* close to posting a 5-3 mark in District 14-6A. This may be a program that has won just three of its first 20 varsity football games entering this season, but the Tigers are enjoying a breakout 2020 that's put them in prime position to clinch its first-ever playoff berth. 

Like Bridgeland, Park graduated its first senior class so foundational players like Sergio Small, Cameron Jeng, and James LeBlanc have all moved on. However, a good portion of their progress in 2019 can be credited to an excellent junior class headed by Harold Perkins, last season's Defensive Newcomer of the Year in District 14-6A. With game-changing ability on offense and defense, Perkins has certainly turned himself into a player to watch and as a result, he has gained serious helium on the recruiting trail as nearly every Power 5 school is vying for his services. Nate Livingston might probably be just as good as Perkins and with the season he's having, it won't be long before Livingston builds up an extensive offer list. Cameron King is a scat-back whose elusiveness makes him a home-run threat whenever he touches the ball. His younger brother, Connor, is a freshman who plays exactly like he does. The younger King has been a role player for the Tigers this year, but keep an eye on him in the coming years.

One of the main questions facing this team was whether they could get some quarterback play. Edward Dixon is now in control of the Tiger offense and he's done enough to keep opposing defenses honest. But truthfully, with the trio of Livingston, Perkins, and Cameron King tearing everyone apart, all Dixon really needs to do is keep opposing defenses honest. His continued development will be key as the season progresses and will ultimately determine how far Park goes this season.

Most of Park's starters play both ways; Perkins and Livingston have also showcased their game-changing ability on defense. Owen Pewee steps into the role Cameron Jeng had last year: a deep threat on offense, a hard hitter on defense. Raymond Sims is the veteran of a talented linebacker group that includes Perkins, Livingston, and Chris Gilbreath. Jarra Anderson is a star in the making on the defensive line that also features Jaylon Simien, Wesley Echerenwa, and Elijah Frazier. Raymond Davis, Mason Canty, Devin Neugebauer star in the secondary.

Like Bridgeland, Park is still a young team and they've got some legit talent in their system and like the Bears, they will be making plenty of noise now and in the future.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

The Wildcats enjoyed a happy Homecoming as they took down a Tigers squad that was up for the challenge, 49-28. Christian Scott scored on a couple of runs while JaVarian Stewart had a 30-yard touchdown catch and an 85-yard kickoff return touchdown. Defensively, Colton Morris had ten tackles. Cameron King gave the Wildcat defense fits for much of the night as he ran for 121 yards and two scores for Park.

Sub-Varsity Game Information

As it's a Thursday game week, sub-varsity game day is Wednesday. JV at Woods, freshmen at Park. Cy Park has one team at each level, so unless Woods finds games for the B-teams, there will be one game at 5:30.

Previously on Cy Woods Football...

Before I start, I have two questions: Can Woods and Ranch play a night game, and can they play on Thursday or Friday? This will be the fourth straight season that the Wildcats and Mustangs will play on a Saturday afternoon. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying all these day games on Saturday this year... I'm just asking if Woods and Ranch can play on any other day and any other time of the day besides Saturday afternoon.

The Cypress Woods Wildcats bounced back from their loss against Bridgeland by taking a back-and-forth affair with Langham Creek by a final score of 42-35 in a game that, honestly... should not have been that close. Dylan Cormier ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns and also threw two more touchdown passes to Myles Johnson. Defensively, Dylan Rogers had ten tackles and Riley Redgrave had a couple of sacks. 

Next up is a big game against a hated rival to kick off the second half of the regular season. After this, there are only three more district games remaining. Feels like we were all in Humble just yesterday watching the Wildcats start their season against Kingwood, huh?

The Mustangs appear intent on reclaiming what was once theirs: supremacy over the Region II portion of Cy-Fair ISD. While this is a game that's always circled on the calendar in the Cy Woods community, Ranch's dominance in this series is taking this matchup dangerously close to "not a rivalry" territory, especially as the Mustangs now have another thorn in their side to contend with in the form of the Bridgeland Bears.

After taking on a more prominent role in the offense due to Logan McDougald's injury and subsequently entering a time-share at quarterback once McDougald returned, the Mustang offense is now officially D.J. Ciers' show. After 2.5 years on the varsity, his book is already written: he's a dual-threat who can make plays and extend them with his legs and his speed makes him a home run threat once he takes off running.

The Mustangs have had plenty of star power at the receiver spot in recent years and Edwin Smith (UTSA) and Ben Postma (Georgia Tech) are two more examples of the premium talent they've developed at that position. Even more remarkable is that they combined to catch five passes (all by Postma) and yet they're committed to Division I schools. Dylan Caddle, who played a bit part as a sophomore last season, has emerged as a reliable target for Ciers. 

Kam Burton showed promise as Willie Eldridge's backup last season and he now moves into the feature back role. Josh Henry, who got some playing time after a mid-season callup last year, has turned into a solid wingman for Burton. They'll run behind the ever-imposing Mustang offensive line that features Bryce Simpson, Jensen Wester, and Caleb Collier. Collier was a first-team All-District selection while Simpson received second-team honors as a sophomore in 2019. 

Blane Channel is a four-year letterman for the Mustangs and he is the anchor of their always-vaunted defensive line. They've produced Division I talent at defensive end in the past with Harrison Loveless and Logan Stiba and the next two in line are likely junior Chibi Nwajuaku and Ashton Porter, a rising sophomore. 

Like Bridgeland, the Mustangs boast enviable depth at the defensive skill positions. Landen Nowak, a first-team All-District linebacker, leads that group along with Orlando Thibodeaux, who was a second-team selection. Jonovan Dennis and Alex Garcia both started/saw playing time as sophomores while Christian Brathwaite spent the entire season on varsity as a freshman, so it's a deep and pretty solid group. But the real strength of Ranch's defense lies in the secondary, where Romario Noel, a Baylor commit, and Robin Neely, an honorable mention All-State performer, roam. Neely led all of Cy-Fair ISD in interceptions with six and returned two of them for touchdowns last season. Xavier Watson and Rodrick Edwards, both solid players in their own right, round out an excellent back four for the Mustangs. Charlie Feris has an excellent leg and he hit a 46-yard field goal last week against Bridgeland.

Previously on Cy Woods Football...

Before I start, I have a question: Can Woods and Langham play on Friday or Saturday for a change? If it wasn't for Tropical Storm Imelda forcing last year's game to be rescheduled, this would have been the fifth consecutive year that a Cy Woods-Langham Creek game will occur on a Thursday.

The Cypress Woods Wildcats were edged out at the death by Bridgeland 35-28 thanks to Conner Weigman's 28-yard touchdown run with 19 seconds left. Dylan Rogers had 11 tackles in the game while Dylan Cormier threw three touchdown passes.

Suddenly, the Wildcats find themselves in a bit of a precarious position as next up for them is a Langham Creek team that's kind of rebuilding, but they also look like one of Woods' main competitors for a playoff spot.

After spending most of the 2010s as one of the top teams in Cy-Fair ISD, the Lobos crashed to the bottom of the standings in 2019 and will begin the 2020s in a rebuilding phase. I guess after they got mauled by Ranch to start district, Coach Thompson saw 2019 as a lost season and he elected to use that year to begin the rebuild. Some of the youngsters who were thrown into the fire last year now have that valuable experience under their belt as they prepare for a full season of varsity football.

The Lobos have had great success developing linebackers in recent years and they've got a nice collection of talent returning at that level of the defense, headlined by Jayhvion Gipson, who committed to Washington State over the summer. He'll be joined by A.J. Owens and Henry Toomer, who all emerged as key contributors last season. In fact, Owens, Gipson, and Toomer are the three top returning tacklers for the Lobos. Their experience will be crucial for a Langham defense that will have to replace its starting defensive line from last year. Ja'Mareion Gipson emerged to seize a starting spot in the secondary as a sophomore and he, along with Henry Jackson, will be counted on to lead what should be another solid group. The younger Gipson will also line up as a running back on occasion. Langham will certainly rely on their defense to keep them in games this season, but ultimately, their performance on offense will determine where they will finish in 2020.

Kevin Durney and Alejandro Vasquez are the leading returning receivers for the Lobos, but the name to remember from this group is Jaquaize Pettaway, a sophomore who has the potential to become the next great Langham Creek wideout. Vasquez has shown his versatility by lining up as a running back in certain situations. Cade Hanks, brother of former Lobo standout Chase Hanks, anchors both lines for the Lobos. Tanner Murray impressed on the JV after transferring in from Cy-Fair and has won the quarterback battle from last season's starter, Seth Johnson. I watched Woods' JV game with Langham last season and Murray was the one kid who stood out for them. He certainly has a Conner Weigman-like mentality when it comes to throwing the ball around, and Langham Creek, a program that has a reputation for producing fine quarterbacks, seems to be the perfect landing spot for him. Jayden Landry is a quick, elusive back who got some action after getting called up as a sophomore last season; he scored a touchdown against Woods in last year's matchup.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

For the second straight year, the weather disrupted a football game between Cy Woods and Langham Creek. This time, Tropical Storm Imelda forced this matchup to be rescheduled from a Thursday night to Saturday morning. The new game time certainly threw off the Wildcats as they only led 14-7 after the third quarter, but they finally found their bearings in the final period and pulled away for a 31-14 victory. The Wildcat defense held Langham to 126 total yards of offense on the day. Jackson Jones threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Previously on Cy Woods Football...

The Wildcats kicked off District 16-6A play with a 34-29 victory over Cy Falls that... let's be honest, they were pretty fortunate to win because they dominated this game and let Falls hang around because they committed five turnovers and twelve penalties. 

Dylan Cormier threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 47 yards. Trayse Holmes put up his second 100-yard game of the season on 20 carries. Myles Johnson caught three passes for 136 yards and all three of his catches resulted in touchdowns; the first came from Cormier and the last two came on double passes from Trey Craft. 

Defensively, Dylan Rogers had seven tackles and a sack, while Riley Redgrave had five tackles and two forced fumbles.

Now, the Wildcats will face a massive test to close out the first half of their 2020 season.

2¢ on Bridgeland

There's nothing really new to report about the Bridgeland Bears other than the fact that they graduated their first class last year. Despite that, most of the kids you've been hearing about the over the last two seasons are back and they are dead-set on seizing the District 16-6A crown. 

Conner Weigman's evolution into one of the top quarterbacks in the state of Texas is still ongoing and he can make any of his receivers look like superstars on any given night. He has now been fully unleashed and has made countless plays with his arm and his legs. Bridgeland packs one of the deepest receiver corps in the state and any of them can put up big numbers on any given night. And to think... Weigman has done all this damage without Dylan Goffney at his disposal. Goffney has missed the first three games due to injury but there's a chance he could be activated for this game that bears significant implications on the playoff and district title race. Mason Culton came on strong late last season and is the Bears' feature back. He's also made himself a factor in the receiving game as well. Gage Geaslin is the anchor of an excellent offensive line. 

Oghenemine Imarah has turned into a disruptive force on the edge in his three years with the Bears. But the real strength of Bridgeland's defense lies in their skill players, where they possess an excellent group of linebackers led by Conner Motsinger, Roderick Gray, Daniel Grisbee, Logan Gartside, and Charlie Moore. And just like their counterparts on offense, the Bears boast a deep and talented secondary that's arguably the best in the district (Ranch probably has something to say about that) and is certainly one of the top units in the city. Gavan Kaspar, Kamren Amao, Bryce McMorris, Terrance Cullivan, and Jack Grier are all battle-tested veterans and they all play with the edge that is expected of two/three-year lettermen.

Is this their final form? With one year of Weigman left, maybe not. But with all the talent they possess right now, Bridgeland feels that 2020 is the year that they ascend to elite status.

Will defeating this team be a tall order? Yes, but then again, last year Woods entered their matchup with Bridgeland in the exact same position: with an unconvincing victory over a not-good team. Bridgeland, on the other hand, seemingly feels like they're on top of the world after taking down a team that's in a similar situation as they are (Klein Cain), hitting the road and beating a defending state champion in Shadow Creek, and then cruising to a win to start district play. 

One thing's for certain, though: it will take a monumental effort to take this budding juggernaut down again. As inconsistent as they've played, I know the Wildcats will be up for this challenge.

Last Time These Two Teams Met

With first place in District 14-6A on the line, Cy Woods turned in a masterclass on defense as they stifled the vaunted Bridgeland offense in a 20-7 victory that seemed more lopsided than the final score suggested. This game also featured probably the Wildcats' worst offensive performance of the year. Twice they lost fumbles deep in Bridgeland territory and they were also stopped on fourth and goal early in the game. However, the defense stepped up to keep the best offense they faced (to that point) off the scoreboard for almost the entire game.

JV at Woods, freshmen at Bridgeland. Game times, as always, are 4:30 and 6:30 on Thursday. In the event that only one game will be played, it will take place at 5:30.
