Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 70

And so ends the 70s. Wrapping things up is number 70, naturally.

The first Wildcat to wear #70 is a good friend of mine, Andrew Hall. Andrew made the first varsity team in 2008, his junior year, and emerged as a key player on a deep offensive line as the starting right tackle. He became the starting left tackle and was selected as a team captain in 2009, his senior season, receiving 1st-team All-District honors for his performance that year.

The next player to wear #70 was Marquise White. Marquise, who received the nickname "Bullneck" for his short, squat build, was a defensive tackle who made the varsity in 2010, his sophomore year. He eventually became a three-year starter on the defensive line. Despite being undersized (in addition to having 500 people on the varsity, we were also known for being undersized in the early years), Marquise always played with unrelenting desire and possessed one of the best motors I've ever seen from a defensive lineman. Marquise played college football at Siena Heights University, an NAIA school in Michigan.

Brian Biddy, an offensive lineman, made the varsity in 2013, his junior year, and was the starting right tackle that year. Brian became the starting left tackle in 2014. Unfortunately, his senior season was cut short due to an injury.

Chris Salinas made the varsity in 2015, his junior year, and was mainly a backup in his two seasons. After not being worn in 2017, Jared Gulley, another backup lineman, wore #70 in 2018.

David Bonilla was the starting right tackle in 2019 and he earned 2nd-team All-District 14-6A honors that year.

Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 71

We're near the end of the 70s, but we're not quite at the end of the run of linemen yet. On to 71.

Joseph McLeroy, a backup guard in 2008, was the first Wildcat to wear #71.

The next player to wear #71 was Josh Kenny, a backup defensive tackle in 2009. His brother, Conner, was a backup defensive tackle in 2011.

Braxton Norris, a starting guard, wore #71 in 2011. That year, he was part of an outstanding offensive line that also featured Jimmy Schmitzer and Conrad Wozniak.

Brandon Kula, a tackle, was called up to the varsity in 2013, his junior year, and was assigned #71. He switched to #54 in his senior year.

Stephon Jones wore #71 in 2016. His older brother, Jarel, played as a defensive lineman in 2013.

Jacob Peterson was one of the primary backups on the defensive line in 2018.

Jace Williams spent his first three years at Cy Woods as an offensive lineman before switching to defense as a senior in 2019. He was a key backup for the Wildcats in his one season as a defensive end.

Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 72

Moving on to #72. All three of these players were offensive linemen. Tackles, to be precise.

Chase Ross, the starting left tackle in 2008, was the first Wildcat to wear #72. He was a 1st-team All-District 15-5A selection that season.

Chris King was the next player to wear #72; he was a backup in 2009. Chris used to live two doors down from me; he joined the Navy after graduating.

The last person to wear #72, for now, was Cody Jessee, a tackle in 2010. His younger brother, Blake, played as a safety in 2012.

Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 73

Halfway through June, and the countdown is now at 73.

James "Jimmy" Schmitzer was the first player to wear 73. He was an offensive lineman who was called up in 2009, his sophomore year. He became a starter as a junior in 2010, playing mostly as a left tackle. Jimmy was a two-year starter on the offensive line and served as a team captain in 2011, his senior year.

Jimmy was a two-time 1st-team All-District 17-5A selection and played collegiately at Southwest Baptist, a Division II school located in Bolivar, Missouri.

A backup offensive lineman in 2012, Travis "Big Sexy" Reynolds, was the next player to wear 73.

Mario Treviño, an offensive lineman, made the varsity as a junior in 2015 and was a two-year starter for the Wildcats, primarily playing as a guard. He was chosen to serve as a team captain as a senior in 2016.

Nolan "Niko" Thompson, a guard, made the varsity in 2018, his junior year, and was mainly a backup in his first season.

Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 74

Now on to number 74.

Jayson Klewitz, a backup offensive lineman in 2009, was the first to wear this number. Jayson joined the Marines in 2011 and was stationed in Okinawa. He has completed his service obligations.

The next player to wear #74 was Miles Wojcik, a backup defensive tackle in 2010.

Charles "Wolfie" Montalvo, a backup offensive lineman, wore #74 in 2012. He was given that nickname because he was already sporting a full beard.

Wyatt Wozniak wore #74 as a senior in 2014. Wyatt switched to the other side of the line of scrimmage and became the starting center after spending his junior year (2013) as a nose tackle. That year, he wore #59, like his brother, Conrad.

Wyatt is currently the starting center at Indiana State, where he's continuing a family legacy; his father, John, and his oldest brother, Austen, both played for the Sycamores.

Max Sweet, the starting nose tackle in 2017, made the varsity in 2016, his junior year. Max holds the Cy Woods record in the power clean. Max currently plays for the Brown Bears. Brown is an Ivy League school located in Providence, Rhode Island.

The countdown continues with #75.

Doug Moses, a backup offensive lineman in 2008, was the first player to wear this number. He was primarily a tackle.

Justin Witt (not to be confused with me), another backup offensive lineman (a guard), wore #75 in 2009.

Christian Horton wore #75 in 2010. He was mainly a tackle and played a bit of center, as well.

Jamal Kinard was a defensive tackle as a sub-varsity player, but he moved to the offensive line and made the varsity in 2012, his junior season. He switched to #52 as a senior in 2013.

Skylar Schulz made the varsity in 2013, his sophomore year. He's the third Wildcat athlete in his family; his older sisters, Sydni and Shayli, were volleyball players at Cy Woods. After getting his feet wet as a sophomore, Skylar was a 1st-team all-district selection at right tackle in 2014, his junior year, and was a 2nd-team selection as a senior playing left tackle in 2015. He is currently playing college football at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, a Division II school located in Alva, Oklahoma.

Johnathan Hunter wore #75 in 2016. He began that season as an offensive lineman and then moved over to defense following injuries and ineligibility.

Tyler Hopmann was the starting left tackle in 2018 and earned 2nd-team All-District honors during his senior season.

Ty Van Atta made the varsity in 2019, his junior year, and was the starting left tackle. His versatility and relentless motor allowed him to play both inside and outside on the offensive line and he was a 1st-team All-District 14-6A selection in his first varsity season.

Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 76

Rolling on with 76...

Robert Pundt, a backup offensive lineman, was the first to wear this number in 2008. His brother, Jonathan, was a defensive lineman in 2012.

Cody Small, a defensive end and a wide receiver for 2 games, was assigned this number when he was called up in 2009, but he later switched to #34 during the season.

With Cody Small taking the #34 jersey full-time in 2010, Gabriel Luna, a defensive tackle, was the next player to wear #76. He was the textbook definition of a gentle giant: always friendly, and a guy who truly enjoyed being part of the team.

Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 77

Now, the Wildcats who have worn #77.

Another offensive lineman, Vince Cammarata, wore #77 in 2009. He is another Wildcat who answered the call to serve as he joined the Army. Now out of the military, Vince now competes in Ironman triathlons.

Ryan Owens, another backup, was the next to wear #77, in 2010.

The next player to wear #77 was John Kirk, who made the varsity in 2012, his junior season.

Hunter Rohles, a tackle, wore #77 in 2014. At 6'9", he is the tallest football player in Cy Woods history.

Ryan Kenny made the varsity in 2015, his junior year, and was the starting right tackle. He moved over to the defensive line and became the starting nose tackle in 2016. His older brother, Shea, swam for Cy Woods and was a part of the first graduating class in 2009.

Trent Allman wore #77 in 2016. I have a hilarious story about him when I saw him as a middle schooler while helping out at SAC camp, but it's kind of mean. He also called Coach Chaya "Coach Jones" that summer. To his credit, he stuck it out and played all four years at Cy Woods.

In 2019, Jaylen Williams became the first defensive lineman to wear 77. He also planned to wrestle for the Wildcats, but an injury derailed that plan. Jaylen moved to Cy Woods from Maryland and despite being a backup, he managed to attract some recruiting attention and he will continue his football career at the Division II level at New Mexico Highlands University.

Cy Woods All-Time Roster: Number 78

The countdown rolls on with number 78.

Andre Matthews, a guard in 2008, was the first to wear this number. His brothers, Nick and Chris, also played for the Wildcats.

Kevin Kirk, an offensive tackle in 2009, was the next to wear 78. He is not related to John Kirk, another offensive lineman who played in 2012.

Michael Gallagher, a guard, was the first player to wear 78 for more than one season. He was also an accomplished thrower, qualifying for regionals in the discus (finished 2nd in district in 2011-12). Michael is not related to Andrew Gallagher, another offensive lineman who played in 2013 and 2014.

Michael recently completed his collegiate career at Friends University, an NAIA school located in Wichita, Kansas.

Brock Gunderson made the varsity as a sophomore in 2016. His older brother, Cole, was the starting center in 2009 and 2010 and also threw for the Cy Woods track team. One of his older sisters, Paige, played volleyball and was a thrower for the Lady Wildcats. His other older sister, Haley, was the student body president at Cy Woods during her senior year. Brock also threw the shot put and discus and also played basketball for the Wildcats. As a senior in 2018, Brock earned first-team District 14-6A honors on the offensive line.

After completing his mission in accordance with the Mormon faith, which I believe lasts two years, Brock will resume his football career at Brigham Young University.
